Funding Closes but the journey continues ...

I can't quite believe it, but the year of my Individual Mainline Grant has come to a close! My funding finished on March 1st 2013 but I can feel a real sense that my journey is just beginning.

I can't thank The Arts Council of Wales enough for the most amazing year only made possible through the funding, enabling me to take time out of my busy schedule as a Creative Director within Community Arts, to focus on my own creativity. I have learnt so many things, which I will talk about in future blogs. I know I initially set up this blog as a requirement for the grant, but I have really enjoyed it! It's a kind of digital diary, and I've been absolutely blown away by the support people have given me through it, with literally 1000's of people from all over the world joining me.

So, I have decided to keep the blog going! It has become an integral part of my life now!

Merry Christmas!

Well, there I was thinking I had finished the films! lol! Have been working on the credits and tidying them up but the major bulk of the work is done, PHEW!

But today is Christmas day ... (MERRY CHRISTMAS btw) the day I promised myself I would take off and rest .. and I have tried!

I opened pressies (thanks everyone) and made a massive pile of every vegetable you can imagine (veggie dinner) and then ... mmm .... errr... ummm ... got a bit bored so have decided to finish my hand made personal invites.

I painted them on my retreat and now I'm printing out, cutting and sticking the insides of them.

I'm starting to get excited now!!!

So, if you would like to receive a hand made personal invite, I would love to send you one. I

'm so touched by how many people have viewed my blog throughout this journey and so if YOU are reading this and YOU would like to come and my special guest ... just send me your land address by email at cherylbeermusic@gmail.com and I will put a hand painted hand made invite in the post to you.

Happy New Year to you and I hope you're also making the most of this quiet down time the festive period brings with it ...

Studio Lock in

Well, having spent since March writing, composing, filming, directing and making, these last few weeks have been more focussed on producing and this weekend I have chained myself and the engineer to the studio for a 48 lock in to get to grips with the films and the soundtracks with narration, linking all the pieces into a whole.

Easier said than done, let me tell ya!

Thing is, in my head, I see things as a whole; I can see the completeness. The difficult thing is translating that. I almost feel as if I could do with a USB on my forehead to download the WHOLE of The Dragon Tree in one go, but instead, I have to marry together all the pieces so that it doesn't look like a patchwork quilt, but flows as one piece.

As a songwriter, traditionally I have recorded individual tracks and put them together as albums but I want to fuse the songs, to give a concept feel; the concept being the West Wales coastline and the story that has grown from it during my journey, using old folk stories, legends and tales, coupled with people's expectations of today and their aspirations for the future.

I have now consulted with over 650 people throughout the writing process and it's important to me that I encapsulate the human element into the piece as a whole, because for me, the coastline is as much about culture as it is about beautiful landscape; we are part of that landscape.

So, why do I want to do a concept piece? Basically, I'm fulfilling a childhood dream of mine. I grew up in the 70's, being born in the 60's, and my favourite times were those spent dancing to Peter and the Wolf in Juniors, or interpeting War of Worlds in Senior School!

Actually, it goes back much further than that.

I remember being about 4 or 5 years old and catching a glimpse of an animated series called The Point. It was about a boy called Oblio who had a round head. He was cast out of his village by all the triangle headed people. He had a dog a called Arrow and I remember recording the track about the dog with my mum from the radio onto our reel to reel tape recorder, as part of the Top 40 run down on a Sunday. It was called :
Me and my Shadow written by Harry Nilson who also wrote the whole story.

Here's The first clip of that film The Point from the 70's. I managed to find it on Youtube and have just realised it's narrated by Ringo Star! This is years before Thomas the Tank! lol! And, the little boys voice is that of Bobby Brady from The Brady Bunch! Well I never!

Anyway, I digress ... So this childhood introduction to concept story and song  is my inspiration.

I also wanted to do a concept piece because I thought it would be a way of me encapsulating everything that I do.

I make films, I write songs, I direct, I sing, I am a musician, I write children's books, I write poetry, I produce, I edit ... I make things! I have quirky out there ideas and make them so ...

I also LOVE to challenge myself and this really has been a personal challenge creatively mostly due to my technical limitations which I will definitely address before the next production ... do you see what I wrote there!

Yes, I almost dare to say it out loud! the next production .. because I am so at one with myself in this process that I can't see me wanting to stop at the end of the funding year!

PS. Spooky Coincidence?!
Although written by Harry Nilson, The Point was co-written by Carol Beers ... now then, I don't know about you, but I find that a bit spooky given that my name is Cheryl Beer! (Can hear the theme music to Tales of the Unexpected in my head running right now!)

Quick update Folks!

Hello folks
I am so busy living Fusion Inspire that I haven't got time just now to tell you all about the inspirations this last week, but just had to leave you a quick note to say that ...

I ended up in the actual front of the steam train with the driver when I went to film the Gwilli Railway this week! How totally cool is that! Have written a banjo piece to fit with the rhythm of the tracks ...

It didn't rain for the film shoot of my song 600 Castles, where I was joined at Kidwelly Castle by 45 children with teachers and Tai Chi instructor Teena Gould .. BEAUTIFUL!

It poured down when we took 45 children to a life size inflatable of Stonehenge to film them bouncing on welsh stone at The National Botanic Garden of Wales . The inflatable installation was there as part of the Cultural Olmpiad!

I have almost finished composing & recording the introduction to the production which feels completely magical ... will explain why in more detail but short story, feels like fulfilling a childhood dream!

My Ukuele film shoot at The Tin Shed Experience in Laugharne is set up now for July 1st with Swansea Ukulele Group and others (YOU IF YOU FANCY IT!) who will all be learning my song Mr Blue Face about the Dylan Thomas Trail!

Seriously, ...  if you DO fancy joining us, drop me a line on facebook or email cherylbeermusic@gmail.com

It's all falling magically into place!!

Will tell ya the full story very soon ... ttfn!

WOW! GREAT RESPONSE TO CALLS FOR A DANCER

DDC Street Dance Crew

Wow .. what a great response to my call for a dancer! Thank you for wanting to be a Fusion Inspire Consultant and take part in  my  film shoot.

I really appreciate the effort made by everyone who took the time to answer my shout out.

I am very pleased to tell you that a young dancer from Swansea called Martin Kurina contacted me.

He has set up and runs a street dance school for young people in his community and he has said today that he would like for his school to take part in Fusion Inspire, so we have booked in July 3rd.

Martin  is going to talk with the dancers next week and I will go to the school in July.

After class, when everyone is warmed up, we'll all head down to the beach for the shoot.

How totally cool is that dudes!

Martin Kurina

Seriously, I'm so chuffed because I love the fact that Martin as a young person is making a difference for other young people and that they are coming together to share thier gift. It sits well with me.

If all goes well,  the troop may be up for coming to perfrom live as part of the end production ... we shall see!

Oh, and if you or someone you know wants to go along to DDC Street Dance Crew then why not have a look at the facebook Group Page for full details. Here's the link:

Fusing with Contemporary Dance

What an AMAZING time I had filming the Contemporary Dance Troop today for Fusion Inspire.

It was a real learning experience for me because it's the first time I have filmed a large group for my OWN piece! I am always supporting others to film their creative vision, but today I filmed MY creative vision and it felt absolutely WONDERFUL to the point that I had tears in my eyes about 4 times!

However, in my usual exuberance and enthusiam I forgot that I am a nearly 50 year old woman who doesn't usually dive bomb across a wooden dance floor for 'the shot' and am now literally covered in bruises! Pain for my art darling ;)

Sadly, we weren't able to do the film shoot as planned in the Bishop's Palace at St.David's because it was absolutely pouring with rain and so the troop ended up in their rehearsal space in the Town Hall in Whitland.

It was a once only opportunity to film them rehearsing with their wings and masks ready for the Cultural Olympiad so it was frustrating for everyone that the rain scuppered us. But let me tell you, I have got some AMAZING footage! The dancers look fabulous on slow motion and it would look so art-y and out there if only ... there wasn't a fire extinguisher or radiator guard or .... etc in the background. Even with clever (or not so clever) editing, it just doesn't work! What an amazing learning opportunity though! I have learnt ...

That LOCATON is EVERYTHNG
So  have emailed Laura to see if there ia any chance at all that I can sort out filming them somewhere else, preferably the orignal plan at ST.David's but if not, anywhere beautiful! (Oh and hide all the shoes and jumpers and bibs and bobs!)

KNOWING THE ROUTINE
How great now that i know exactly what i'm looking for next time i get to shoot them cos I'm trusting the uiniverse that I will!) And this time I know the bits I need to focus on which I don't usually get the chance to do when collating material on the hoof.

BAD WEATHER CONTINGENCY!
This is the most important learning experience. I don't know why I hadn't put one in place for Fusion Inspire but I will need to. Have emailed already with an idea so will keep you posted on that one! But ALL of my shoots are outside and weather dependent so can you imagine! Usually I say, Oh well whatever the weather is how it's meant to be for filming but you can not film with my limited set up in howling wind and rain ... and you can not expect people to dance, sing, act or play in in it!

HUMANS CAN DO AMAZING THINGS
And I kind of knew this already, but the dedication, the sweat, the heart and the love that the Dancers had, the obvious committment on such a long and complex routine, well, I was absolutely blown away.

I knew some of the dancers from community projects they have taken part in with me in the past, but they are like different people! They have developed so much it's unbelievable ...

And this is undoubtedly due in part to the Dance Team at Arts Care Gofal Celf led by the visionary and inspirational Coordinator, Laura Hackett.

But off course, it is the growth, development, hard work and passion of the dancers as individuals and as a troop that make what they do somehow bigger than dance.

I had a go at trying to 'hide the room' by filming and photographing through the materials that the girls were dancing with but the answer is defo to do the shoot again ...

I like some of the pictures through material and they do hide the room but you can not beat outdoors ...

... especially when you live in West Wales

anything will work, urban, rural, the mesmerising kiss of the sea ... woops am having a mermaid moment there! But I learnt more from this experience than I would have if it hadn't rained so I will count my blessings (and knee bruises: photo to follow cos you seriously will not believe how battered I am! lol)

Many thanks to Arts Care Gofal Celf Dance Dept.

And thank you to The Arts Council of Wales and Welsh Gov.t for my Individual Mainline Grant
