Sunflowers, Poetry & Humming Bees

One of my favourite things in the whole wide world, is responding to nature through poetry & pictures, especially using the immediacy of my phone camera & voice recorder to capture the moment. There is something almost magical about letting the soul speak with nature. It is so healing.

In this blog, you'll find 2 digital poems from our trip to Rhossili at The Gower. The first is a spoken word poem inspired by the heart filled sunflowers, dancing gently in the breeze.

Sit Back
by Cheryl Beer

The enchanting sunflower fields at Rhossili, are part of the breath taking and beautiful Gower, lovingly cared for by the National Trust.

This 2nd poem is inspired by the myriad of beautiful bees who dance and hum between the sunflowers, dizzy on pollen.

Shall be
by Cheryl Beer

Could anything be more healing than the rugged landscape, the sea, the sunflowers, the sun, bumble bees in good spirits and pockets filled with poems?

Maybe ...

Empowered by Flowers: A Re-Write for Blodeuwedd

I've been struggling this week with the artistic design of the covers and marketing materials for my new Creative & Mindful Collection of Books, Cd's and Video Workshops, so in response, rather than stress over it, the best way to deal with my lack of design clarity, is to take myself completely away from the task in hand and do something else. Then hopefully, I will return afresh in a few days. That's the plan, anyway.

So, I decided to record a new story that came to me after a meeting with the lovely storyteller, Eleanor Shaw at Y Ffwrnes Theater, Llanelli where she is the Adopta Artsit and also runs her  business People Speak Up. I went to see her because I had a feeling that People Speak Up would be a perfect partner for collaboration with one of my creative projects, Sound Memories Dementia Friendly Radio Station ... anyway, I digress , as we chatted, we started talking about the ancient stories of the Mabinogion, and how they are not particularly woman friendly. In fact, women are mostly depicted as either devious, powerless, suffer some kind of abuse or come to a sticky end or become a nun.

On the way home from our meeting, I started thinking about Blodeuwedd, The Woman made from Flowers, portrayed as an adulteress who beguiles her lover into killing her husband, but the plan goes horribly wrong and she ends her days as an owl, whilst her lover ends his as a standing stone.

But ... from the outset of the story, she was completely dis-empowered. For a start, she was made for Llew, and not for herself, from beautiful flowers ... then she was trapped up in his castle and forced to be his wife. Now, I ask you, what woman made from flowers would want to be stuck inside a castle all day, instead of dancing in the Summer fields? And besides, Llew doesn't come across in the story as a very nice person, in fact it sounds to me that he was a bit of a control freak. So, when he was away at battle for months at a time, it must have felt wonderful for our Blod, to be back out in the fields playing with butterflies, where she belonged.

... And whilst there, she meets the hunky hunter. As soon as their eyes lock, it is the first time she has known love. Bless her, we've all been there, haven't we? When all sense goes out of the window and we listen to our sacral chakra.

Do you feel differently about her yet? Off course I am not condoning her behaviour. It is never acceptable to plan to kill one's husband. I'm sure my own partner will be very relieved to know that! But if this story is written from a different perspective, one of empowerment from the outset, rather than dis-empowerment, I began to wonder how it might pan out .. and this is the premise for my new story: Empowered by Flowers, a re-write of Blodeuwedd.

I have recorded the story on my phone to send to Eleanor to make her smile and meanwhile, as a break from my design indecision about covers for the new collection, I have amused myself by making some handmade bespoke books within which to hand write Empowered by Flowers.

It actually feels empowering to hand make these little tiny books and to write them by hand because women were not permitted or taught to write until much later than men. Hence, we have not had a hand in writing our own history. Sitting to hand write a story from a woman's perspective, about a woman empowered by flowers, feels somewhat empowering in itself. (I apologise for the emphatic use of the word empowered in that paragraph, but really, I felt empowered to use it, so I did, lots).

It has been a lovely way to spend my evenings. I don't need an excuse to write stories and make books. I LOVE doing it. I am hoping that this very hands on creativity will give my brain some inspiration, a vision for the cover design for my published books, so that  I can return to a more graphic design based creativity soon.

Oh yes, by the way, if you would like me to make you your own bespoke collection of handmade books containing my re-write of Blodeuwedd, Empowered by Flowers, feel free to drop me a line on facebook. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, know that we are all flowers tied together in one very beautiful bunch.

Still in the shape of your hands

Today's Song share is 'Brown Leather Glove' from my Album 'Just Another Judas' which was a folking.com album of the month in 1998. Oh my days, that's 20 years ago!

Brown Leather Glove was written on the day I found a pair of my Grandad's gloves after he had passed away and they were still in the shape of his hands. I buried my face in them and let the grief flow through me. He is holding me, still.

My rock, Jeff Beer, is playing lead guitar, I am on main guitar and vocals ... and a musician friend called Steve Karavasili is playing piano,  I haven't seen him for absolutely years. I wonder how he is doing.

We recorded it in our home studio when we were living in Bridgend. This album took me all over the country pretty much playing 300 gigs a year. It was the only way to get your music heard back in those days ...

6 Baubles for Christmas

A set of six baubles, fit to put a smile on any baby's face, so he gave the shop keeper a three-penny pence piece and put them under his arm.
'Keep the change,' he chirped and carefully carried the cheerful glass ornaments to his van. Steady, so as they wouldn't rattle and break, he wrapped them in his jacket and took them home.

She had never had a Christmas before, nor would she remember this, her first one, but for sure she would remember his love for eternity.

Now the age he was, she unwrapped the old faded tissue paper, holding the two surviving baubles in her hand, placing them ceremonially upon her fireplace.

Though he was long passed away, she knew that his love would keep her strong through many Christmases and beyond.

Sending you Yuletide Blessings for you and Heartfelt thanks to all those that have ever loved you.

Step into Your Power

I just wanted to share with you that I have spent the whole day working on an Anthology of my Inspirational Stories and Poems. It is a wonderful thing to bring together the threads of the last 14 months since my hearing loss and weave a tapestry of stories to inspire healing for others.

You know, we are all healers, every one of us. When we fall and graze our knee, it heals. We take it for granted but when you think it through, goodness me. Our cells are renewing every minute.

We are miracles. Everywhere you look, humans are healing each other and creatures too. In hospitals, surgeries, holisitc treatment centres, vets ... and also in our small exchanges of love.

Let's step into our power as the incredible beings that we are. Breathe in our magnificence and breath out joy for others.

If you'd like to know more about my work, feel free to  pop over to my website. I am in the process of completely overhauling it but the Home page and the About Page are just about ready. There is a new story on the Home Page with a little film I made yesterday ...

The Power of Publishing

Having made time to deeply reflect upon my work, ground myself in this new now and open my heart to new intentions, I have been working on my website for Parlour Press Publishing

I set up Parlour Press Publishing 17 years ago when I was approached by Caerphilly Youth Service to tour Youth Clubs facilitating Creative Writing Workshops. I drafted a plan to extend the project from workshops so that it had a celebratory outcome, a platform from which the young people could have a voice as writers in their own right and to inspire each other. I was taken aback at the power of publishing in terms of its ability to raise self esteem and touch the hearts of many.

Tales from Two Valleys was a retelling of all the local folk tales of the area and won a National Youth Excellence Award from the Welsh Assembly. What I had intended as one project that I essentially ran from my front parlour (and still do to a certain extent) has now facilitated 49 Community Groups to write collections short stories and anthologies of poems, supported in my workshops and then to publish their work into soft back books or more recently, ebooks.

In addition, Parlour Press has recorded and edited more films and digital stories than I care to remember. This year alone I have been contracted to edit 21 inter-generational digital stories and 2 major website based storytelling projects, one for

Parlour Press has won Best Practice at the International Mental Health Conference held at Cambridge University, a Gold National Care Award, a further Youth Excellence award ...

I am really very proud of such a huge body of work that has literally changed lives and fed into national policy regarding education and care in Wales.

But I am so busy out there doing the work that I never get time to reflect or design materials to tell anyone about it! It's all grown via word of mouth. So, it gave me great joy to spend time on the website.

Feel Free to on come over and have a look ... see what you think. I've kept it as simple as possible. I think sometimes less is more when storytelling through a website.

Oh and if you you'd like to know more about me, you can visit my Cheryl Beer website ... it's also having a major overhaul at the moment so some pages are not quite ready ...

Lazarus Carpenter at Quiet Space Studio

It is so lovely to welcome storytellers, poets, authors and writers from all over the country to come and share their work at Quiet Space Studio.

Every month I have a Resident Author in so much as they are resident on the Quiet Space Website and their work is promoted within the studio.

This month it has been a joy to promote the work of Lazarus Carpenter. Although he is best known for his award winning songwriting and festival events, he is in fact a prolific writer.

In my last blog about him he gave a deep insight into his first book the Ballad of Penygraig and in this interview, he tells us about his new trilogy, The Prophecy.

It is sounds absolutely intriguing based on part legend, part history and a good part of Lazarus' never ending creative mind, he explores ... well ... I won't give too much away ... have a listen and hear it from the man himself ...

Experimenting with Hand Dyed & Hand Spun Wool

At Quiet Space Studio, I have been experimenting this week with handspun, naturally dyed wool.

My friend Caroline Lane from Hembra Crafting kindly gave me a drop spinning lesson and left me with some examples of her hand dyed wool.

The pictures above and below of my Circle of Friendship Bracelets are hand spun on drop spindle and then woven. The wool has been dyed with Advocado Skins. Interesting dusky colour & not the green you might expect.

I have woven the Circle of Friendship Bracelet below  with 2 pieces of wool, one is dyed by Caroline with banana fibres, the other with indigo and gors, which are little yellow flowers from the hillside in New Quay.

I have also been experimenting this week with the original 1970's Retro wool that Caroline also kindly gifted me. This Circle of Friendship Bracelet is made with retro acorn beads.

And this Circle of Friendship Bracelet, I have woven with merino silk wool that was kindly handspun as a gift from my dear friend Susan Berry on her spinning wheel. I have started experimenting with making my own charms for my bracelets, like this little wooden love heart.

I infused all the wool with essential oils by hand whilst weaving using Neal's Yard. I love Neal's Yard because it is a UK based company that doesn't test on animals, is pure and organic.

All the oils are 100% pure and are literally, nature in a bottle. I LOVE them. Click the photo to have a browse of all the lovely oils.

All my Circle of Friendship Bracelets are available at Quiet Space Studio or my new Facebook Shop. Here's a link if you'd like to pop over and have a gander.

Forgotten Corners : National Wool Museum of Wales

When I visit museums, it gives me great joy to see what we expect to see. At the National Wool Museum of Wales, we would expect to see a plethora of fabulous blankets and off course a water wheel.

But what really makes my heart sing in a museum, is a glimpse of how life was; the simple beauty in the seemingly ordinary. The nooks and crannies that have stayed untouched.

There is a romance in the way that the sun dances with yarn on the fading window sills ...

A humanness about the wooden joints so carefully crafted into benches ...

A joy in rows of spun wool ...

A thrill in the knots of old wood ...

against woollen remnants ...

a magic that today's perfection driven culture tidies up or clears away. A reminder, a truth, an authenticity that touches me.

Because it evokes the past ...

inviting me tell part of the story for myself.

And that's what I loved the most about my visit to the museum, the stories that were intimated in the forgotten corners.

Quiet Space Welcomes Ruth Peterson

How lovely to meet and welcome Ruth Peterson to Quiet Space Studio today.

... with her lovely new felt collection. The felt she uses is 100% Made in Britain and the beautiful buttons are hand forged by her husband.

Ruth's Collection is named 'Mabli Jack' & is handmade in Wales, about half an hour from Llandysul. Perfect.

Ruth says, 'The sculptural quality of the thick felt inspired me to create this capsule collection with co-ordinating bags and bowls. The vivid colours are fantastic, full of fun. I enjoy the mix of colours coming together in very tactile objects.'

It is a joy to welcome artists into my Quiet Space. I love watching people walk past and see what surprises are waiting for them.

If you would like to rent an Exhibition Box in the window at Quiet Space, why not drop me a line.

Pressing Matters

Last year, my dear friend Justine Dodd from Cariad Glass, LLandysul, was looking for a new home for her flower presses. I jumped at the chance. I LOVE pressing flowers. My Mum and I exchange pressed flowers and when I was little I made a pressed flowers book that won first prize in a Village fete.

Well, it has taken me a whole year to open Justine's presses to put my own flowers in and when I peeled back the layers of paper, I found lots of old pressed flowers that she had left in there.

So, given that it is Sunday and Sundays are for pressing matters, I decided to make little pictures with the flowers.

I think I will frame my little dried flower pictures this week and take into my Quiet Space Studio.

Funny how such little things can create so much happiness.

If you enjoy my blog, why not pop over to www.quietspacestudio.com to see what else I'm up to.

Welcome to Quiet Space Studio & Gallery

I am so excited to share my new venture with you. For some strange reason, I had this idea that I needed a separate blog for Quiet Space Studio & Gallery. I suppose before I had moved in I didn't realise how utterly beautiful it would be or even if it would work. But what I have found, is that it has very quickly become my heartbeat, a place of immense love.

It really is the most healing space. I play meditation music softly in the background, I have essential oils in my cold air diffuser & a writing desk set up for when a poem or story comes.

There's a comfy seated area to knit and make &  a beautiful exhibition window.

I find that it has re-sparked my deep need to create and I find myself working on 2 new exhibitions and I also have 2 to install for the Summer.

Quiet Space has given me back a sense of connection to the world. Friends call in, I have meetings there, folk passing peer in and wave. I am part of something instead of being isolated at home mourning my hearing loss.

I have 2 fundamental questions that Quiet Space can answer: - Is it possible to create a work environment that nurtures my new health needs?

The second is more an exploration of arts based mediums to see if I can find quiet ways to express words, now that sustained music and song can no longer be part of my life: I am experimenting to see if I can find a new voice through multi and mixed media.

Anyway, I digress ... just to say that from today, I will blog about my Quiet Space journey here at Fusion Inspire, where it should have been all along.
